Hearts ablaze…

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

“It is only when we silent the blaring sounds of our daily existence that we can finally hear the whispers of truth that life reveals to us, as it stands knocking on the doorsteps of our hearts.”  (K.T. Jong)

***************

It seems that we might not even be aware of the daily blaring sounds…I know that I can fall deaf to them by way of routine and familiarity. Those whispers (I call them “stirrings) are so,so soft…barely flickering their light or tapping gently at our hearts as we go about our madness. I was excited to lead this retreat with my inspiring pal, Elida…but I was also open to some revelations for my own creative life.

*

It seems that through teaching we can touch a part of ourselves without going after it with a overzealous desire to fix everything. I was saying words to my new found friends I needed to take in myself and truly believe them…knowing that I would never give an opinion regarding what action to take if I didn’t wholeheartedly wish it for my own creative life.

*

So…suffice it to say that the two days we spent were far too short

the company and conversation was beyond amazing…as was the food (still digesting a ridiculous amount of hummus-among-us)

and I really wasn’t ready to return to reality.

* * *

* * *

am really looking forward to some plans Elida and I have for future retreats and day workshops covering similar topics. Through some “fallen-through plans” and a weekend that seemed to have a lot of would-be attendees tied up (thank you, ladies for writing me anyway), our small group was perfect…intimate and sweet—wonderful for a maiden voyage in the magical little hamlet of Manzanita on the Oregon Coast.

*

Day one began with some major blabbing about poking that creative muse and getting her out to play…tips on what we need as females to carve out time, space and permission (or so we think–haha) to get down to it. Elida and  I bantered back and forth about our own journeys and ups and downs and frankly, got pretty candid…and it felt absolutely right because these women were in all stages of life and ready for a change…ready to grow some wings…and sometimes growing wings involves trusting that it actually can be done in big transitional stages in life without everything falling apart.

*

Then…

*

it

*

got

*

down

*

to

*

camera

*

business

*

and there was a big ‘ole lesson and some shooting time…In the cottage’s garden and then on to the beach. What an absolute blast!

****************************

Who knew a little garden would have so many treasures to focus that 2.8 f-stop on?

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * fF*

Portrait-taking in funky (meaning “icky” and dark) light is my speciality and I had fun teaching the ladies some tips and tricks. I love hearing that “ahhhhhh” when women with cameras “get it”. Music to my ears. I shot each woman with a secret plan to have an image to send them after the retreat and they all got to shoot each other. They are ALL so lovely!

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

*******************************

‘Even got a portrait of me blazing down the beach looking for that perfect sunset spot…and posing in my favorite cottage trellis…one day I will own a little beach cottage like the one below.

*

* * *

**********************

The beach at sunset…oh, how I love the West coast…the sun coming up over the ocean on East coast mornings always seemed so wrong to me…I love the reds and pinks at sunset and this evening did not disappoint.

* **

* * *

* * *

** *

* * *

* * *

Tell me if I’m wrongElida family members…but I’ve seen this look before, haven’t I? Very funny! I absolutely love this woman and was so privileged to teach with her…she is an artistic talent beyond measure and has the most generous of hearts, willing to share all that she knows to change women’s lives….big smooches, E!

*

* * *

What is it about the feet thing? My studio manager, Mary, always teases me about my foot festish…I really don’t have one (SWEAR!), but it always comes back to the darn toes in the sand…

*

* * *

Okay…can you tell which toenail is missing? Mr. Pinky had an “incident” with the ottoman and the ottoman won. Painting the random bench warmer toenail underneath with red is always a joy…lucky it wasn’t the big one!

* * *

* * *

Beach portraits are special around here because the beach is two hours away. I relish any up-to-the-sun-setting shooting time I can get and to have five willing subjects at my disposal was lovely, lovely.

* * *

* * *

* **

* * *

****************************

Bar-none..my fave image of the weekend…Elida was saying something funny (naturally) and we were all feeling something greater than ourselves…and that awesome beach…and  the wind…and the good shots…happy camper, says I.

* * *

***************************

Thank you for such a wonderful time, friends…I am excited to hear about the new adventures you’re committing to…don’t be afraid to ask for what you want.

*

(next post, you see some collage action with Miss E…the girls rocked it)

Hearts ignited…

Monday, July 26th, 2010

* * *

* * *

************************

Okay…so much to share about the “Ignite the Heart” retreat and so much to do today that does not (sadly) involve blogging.

I’ve got a lot of work catch-up–but, hopefully tomorrow I’ll fill you in on one INCREDIBLE weekend with some INCREDIBLE women.

Girlfriends matter.

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

A landmark UCLA study suggests friendships between women are special. They shape who we are and who we are yet to be. They soothe our tumultuous inner world, fill the emotional gaps in our marriage, and help us remember who we really are.

*

By the way, they may do even more. Scientists now suspect that hanging out with our friends can actually counteract the kind of stomach-quivering stress most of us experience on a daily basis. A landmark UCLA study suggests that women respond to stress with a cascade of brain chemicals that cause us to make and maintain friendships with other women. It’s a stunning find that has turned five decades of stress research — most of it on men — upside down.

As for my own girlfriends in my life…thank you for providing something so immeasurably important that I cherish during this “growing up” phase of turning 40. I appreciate the fact that you love me despite my many quirks and faults and hold up a mirror to me sometimes…love you for it.

A little about the “Ignite the Heart” girls~

*

Elida Field is a reknowned artist in the Northwest. She not only exhibits and sells her work all over the United States, she has a passion for teaching. Her “Art-Van-Go” classes for children are extremely sought after by schools in the Northwest as well as private classes in her home. Elida also created two sets of classes for adults called “Art-Women-Wine” and Collage Clinics. Visit her site and see what she’s been working on.

*

*

* * *

Lara Blair is a portrait photographer in the Northwest with a focus on dogs and “The Unexpected Portrait” for families, a styled “magazine-inspired” experience. She just signed a book contract with Amherst Media to write a book about dog portrait photography. Lara used to be a teacher and really enjoys this role, hence the new adventure of the “Ignite the Heart” series of retreats with her favorite creative pal, Elida. In fact, it was at an Elida collage clinic that Lara discovered mixed media and soldering jewelry, which she now sells on Etsy.

Dream big.

Loving this quote today…

* * *

The moment when you first wake up in the morning is the most wonderful of the twenty-four hours. No matter how weary or dreary you may feel, you possess the certainty that, during the day that lies before you, absolutely anything may happen. And the fact that it practically always doesn’t, matters not a jot. The possibility is always there.

~ Monica Baldwin

* * *

Holy cow, friends…yesterday, April 21st, was a pivotal day in the land of dreaming big for this MPG.

*

I received a call from Amherst Media, a photography book publisher, and they asked if I would be interested in writing a dog portrait studio how-to book….200 images, 178 pages….my vision.

*

Holy crap.

*

They read the article I had in Professional Photographer magazine, looked at the site and we conferenced via phone today. Pending the okay on the outline that I need to do (!!!) in the next couple of weeks, looks like I might become an author. Funny, because I’m always dreaming up book projects and never actually following through, claiming that life gets in the way. Could it be that I just needed a deadline?

*

I’ve personally learned a lot from these Amherst books…have my own libary of them going back 10 years. A photog I really respect named Tamara Lackey wrote this fab book…in fact, I bought it when it first came out. Her voice comes through so beautifully in its pages.

* * *

* * *

I’m excited

*

nervous…

*

…putting a plan together.

*

I’ve been dreaming out loud so much lately…I think the daily inspiration from my bloggy pals and creative women around me has allowed me to even fathom that such a thing would transpire.

*

Anyway…kind of premature with this news…but I just had to share because I’m just so darn excited.

Segue to breast cancer Uber-Warrior Krista Colvin……..

* * *

* * *

………who came in for a pick-me-up-photo shoot this week. Although she’s been focusing on the panty thing since her breast cancer diagnosis…we thought a little shift into the land of hats would be appropriate…

*

…since this girl wears so many of them.

*

Found a great quote in a fave photog’s Rodney Smith’s book, “The Hat Book”.

*

“A hat is a flag,  a shield, a bit of armor, and the badge of femininity. A hat is the difference between wearing clothes and wering a costume; it’s the difference between being dressed and being dressed up; it’s the difference between looking adequate and looking your best. A hat is to be stylish in, to glow under, to flirt beneath, to make all others seem jealous over, and to make all men feel masculine about. A piece of magic is a hat.”  –Martha Sliter

* * *

It was a rough hair week for sweet Krista…the hair is falling out from chemo…she went wig shopping and blogged about the whole thing. We talked about what this means for her…when is it time to shave the ‘ole head…when is it time to just surrender and let it go. As with everything, she deals with this situation with humor, bravery and grace.

*

Behold multiple hat-wearin’ chica, Krista…

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

I think how a person deals with a crisis says an enormous amount about the deepest part of their heart. Krista has such a “well..it is what it is..so what is my next step” attitude and is so willing to share…I think her blog is just what the doctor ordered for women in all parts of the country dealing with breast cancer. Her positive outlook and attitude need to be bottled and used all the time…not just in times of crisis.

I can learn a lot from my friend.

Unexpected Portrait Project…The Vintage Series

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

It seems that lately I’m drawn to all things vintage.

I believe it’s because vintage things have  a history,

a heart,

a story-telling adventure.

It seems that all-things-vintage have brought wonderfully amazing people into my life in the past year.

Case in point, the copy of “Flea Market Style” that arrived as a gift in the mail today (love you, Pati)…especially sweet because I’ve been unable to find it. Darned if my reupholstered settee from the studio isn’t in the Barn House spread in that glossy! I was so excited…my settee is famous Amos. ;)

I’m been drawn in to Vintage Princess Portrait Land.

It’s a fabulous place full of

chippy furniture,

coy smiles,

pearls and lace.

I do believe the first series in the Unexpected Portrait Project has arrived~

Doxie Retro style

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

I have some fun images I took of a lovely artist and her “doxies”. As you know,  I have a secret desire to own a Dachshund and name him Mr. Noodle (as in Sesame Street). Now, let me start by saying that ONE hound peeing in my house at the age of four is quite enough, thank you…but still this nagging ache for this little weiner dog eats at me. PH is not amused, as he is usually the one on all fours scrubbing the floor of Daisy excrement…

goodness, Beagles are hard

adding a Mr. Noodle probably wouldn’t be a good idea…

but…

look…

really look…

at the UTTER and COMPLETE CUTENESS of these dogs….

Kim Poloson, an incredible talent in the art world (you can see of her gear here) had me into her home this week…the house and collections this woman has are amazing…truly. I couldn’t gone through her stuff all day….Ephemera Heaven.

Anyhoo—here are the dogs in all of their glory. I do believe the scarf images are some of my absolute faves lately.

Here’s an un-messed with image of the lovely Kim…she is gorgeous, isn’t she?

. It started with the dogs (who I suspect know I want one of their kind), but trickled into my lovely retro subject. In the frame of mind that I wanted to “stylize” this portrait time with her, I asked her to find some vintage gear right down to her toes and come outside while I tromped around in the mud looking for garden spots.

The Driveway Chronicles…

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

…with:

1) a vintage camera

2) a pitcher of dying tulips

3) an old clock

4) a set of plastic horses

5) a bowl of dead ocean creatures

aaaaaand…..some white seamless paper and an open garage.

Hmmmm…..

Curious?

Yeah…I was too.

**********************************

I started years ago without studio lights and all of the gear that I seem to accumulate too much of now.

Sometimes you just need to go back to where it all started.

It just so happens that the open shade a garage provides is a fab-u-lous spot for portraits (with some kind of reflector and the sun coming from the side).

I used it because I loved the results…

…and then I got all FancyShmancy and invested in a studio set-up…

took a ton of lighting classes…

traveled to study with the hotshots…

blah,blah,blah…

* * * *

But TODAY….

I gathered the gear and headed outside.

By gear, I mean the Big Kahuna, some white seamless paper remnants, and…

items 1-5 at the top of this post.

I grabbed whatever spoke to me…

be it metaphor or just that I thought it was an interesting object.

Even my hub came out and brought his model airplane for me to photograph—after he got done teasing me about lying on the driveway tummy-down on a towel with the Big Kahuna prodding a toy horse…

he’s not laughing now that I printed him a studio-worthy shot of his man-toy :)

* * * * *

I digress…

*

yes, me digressing…

*

a shock…

*

Here were the renderings from my driveway rendezvous….

So, friends…I’m creating something fun—As part of the “Ignite the Heart Art” line of products in my Etsy shop, I will be offering cards (as in watercolor paper with envelopes) of some of my work. I am curious about what LBI images you feel would be best used for such a thing….and possibly as single 8×10 mounted/matted prints for home decor.

Some of the other choices from a past post are here

‘would love to hear your suggestions as I wander off down creation road with this idea…me and my ideas…I find such fab ways of creating more computer time for myself…what’s up with that, anyway?

sigh.

‘Appreciate your suggestions…
